Near Dickinson, North Dakota, farmer Ed Kessel’s crop needs rain. “The largest rain we’ve had this season is a few hundredths around Memorial Day. We need at least one inch of rain and if we don’t get something by the 4th of July, it will start getting ugly.” The small grains look good from the road, but up close Kessel says there are some issues. “The majority of the spring wheat is at flag leaf. The wheat heads are a decent size, but there aren’t as many tillers as we’d like.” Wireworms are also being found.
