Minnesota Farmers Union hosted a webinar to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic with its members. One portion of the webinar focused on supply chain challenges. “With the large meat packing plants shutting down, it really shows the insecurity of our food system,” said Gary Wertish, president, Minnesota Farmers Union. “I’ve been visiting with Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen and Governor Tim Walz to find a way to get more diversified processing plants in the state. We’ve been working on this for years and a lot of it is a federal issue, but now could be an opportunity. This doesn’t fix the big plants, but we want to find a way to keep those plants running and keep employees safe. The employees are just as important as the farmers.” The webinar also addressed the Small Business Administration loan program, Country of Origin Labeling and rural mental health.
