Renewable Fuels Association chief economist Scott Richman says the recent oil market decline is a sign of these unusual times. “It’s reflective of the demand destruction for transportation fuels,” says Richman. “It’s hard to get supply and demand in balance.” RFA CEO Geoff Cooper says 73 U.S. ethanol plants are completely idled. There are another 71 plants that have significantly reduced their output rates, leaving about 60 plants operating near normal. “The story of ethanol and the coronavirus is more than the gallons produced,” says Cooper.
