The USDA is now investigating cattle prices during the coronavirus. South Dakota Congressman Dusty Johnson says it will take some time. “The USDA hasn’t yet released their investigation on what happened in the wake of the Holcomb fire. If these investigations are done correctly, they’re going to take time.” Johnson says what consumers are paying for beef at the grocery store is high and what producers are getting for live cattle is low. “That gap is as big as it’s ever been. It’s not fair to the cattle producers or consumers,” explains Johnson. “We want a system that more fairly assigns value across the chain. Hopefully, we can get a better sense of what’s going on.”
