The current market dynamics are challenging for farmers. “We are figuring out how to respond to this,” said Paul Sproule, a farmer from Grand Forks, North Dakota. “How will this change the dynamics of agriculture today?” Sproule said local farmers may be more focused on specialty crop mixes this year. “Specialty crops like dry edible beans may have more promise, sugarbeet growers are in decent shape and potatoes could have potential. However, the potatoes grown for processing could be cut back, because of usage. Freezers are full. They’re cutting contracts out west and in our area, too.” Sproule is focused on being optimistic. “What we don’t know is what we don’t know: how long this will last. We will deal through this adversity and we’ll see what it brings us.”
