Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue was on Twitter this weekend, saying USDA is monitoring all commodity markets during this coronavirus outbreak and paying special attention to “the difference in prices from the farm gate to the grocery shelf.” In particular, Perdue cited the livestock industry. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, U.S. Cattlemen’s Association and other groups have called for fairness from the packing industry. Tyson Foods responded by saying it would add a $5 premium to its base cash cattle price and $7.94 per hundredweight to dressed and grid cattle this week to demonstrate the company’s commitment to cattle suppliers. Other packers are expected to follow suit.
