Low commodity prices don’t offer a lot of opportunity, but Utterback Marketing President Bob Utterback says be ready to take advantage of opportunities when they appear. “I think all commodities will make multi-year lows between now and fall. As a feed buyer, there are some big decisions to be made in the next six months. As a seller, we need to survive the short term,” says Utterback. “Old crop corn needs to be moved, because basis is tight. We need to try and mitigate as much damage as possible for 2020 and get finances ready to take advantage of the market recovery.” Utterback also says it will take planning to be able to capture those opportunities. “If we get weather and inflation to intersect, it could be like 2012 easily. That’s the good news as long as you have the banker and partners on the same page, mentally. You can’t just wake up one day and do it, it’s a long-term planning.”
