The South Dakota House passed a bill to legalize hemp on Tuesday. Now, the Senate will consider the legislation. South Dakota Farmers Union lobbyist Mitch Richter says funding remains one of the big unknowns for this hemp bill. “The governor has a proposal in that says this will cost $3.5 million to fund the hemp program. The legislature believes it’s closer to $1 million,” says Richter. “There is no money in the budget for the program. Those two are at odds and we’ll have to figure that out in the next few weeks.” Richter thinks the money will be found and the bill will pass in the Senate. “It may be a few weeks.” The South Dakota legislature passed the halfway mark on Tuesday in a 37-day session.
