This past year will go down in the record books for the number of crop insurance claims. Countryside Insurance Agency owner Jennifer Otteson says the losses were significant. “In my 25-plus years in crop insurance, I’ve never seen anything like it; we saw major claims with every crop.” For those farmers with prevented plant, Otteson says there are a lot of considerations. “Go through the ‘what ifs’ with your agent so you know what you’re dealing with this spring,” said Otteson. “Be careful if you’re adding land and that land still has crop on it from last year. That may or may not be eligible for prevented plant coverage.” Otteson encourages farmers to meet with their agent “sooner, rather than later.” Countryside Insurance hosted a crop insurance meeting Wednesday in Reynolds, North Dakota.
