USDA is reviewing options to provide disaster assistance to sugarbeet producers. North Dakota Senator John Hoeven, Minnesota Congressman Collin Peterson and Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative CEO Kurt Wickstrom met with USDA Undersecretary Bill Northey to discuss the losses seen this fall. This follows a similar meeting with the American Crystal Sugar Company board. “What the co-ops are trying to do is come up with a way to treat all of its members as equally as possible. We have a situation here where people that didn’t harvest are going to come out better than people that did harvest because they have fixed costs, crop insurance and so forth. They’re trying to use this process to equalize this situation.” Peterson says USDA has been responsive to this situation, but it will take time finalize a formula that works for the sugarbeet industry.
