North Dakota Grain Dealers Association Executive Vice President Stu Letcher says propane shortages and extremely wet corn are bringing harvest to a standstill. “The corn coming in has test weights ranging from the low-40s to the high end of 56 pounds. Most of it is around the 48 to 52 pounds and 26 percent moisture. Some may be drier, but most of it is wet.” Cracked kernels and fines are causing very high foreign material numbers in the corn, which makes it difficult to meet shipping specs. Propane shortages are stopping drying all together in some areas. “We’re probably allocated to the point where we’ll see and are currently seeing driers shutting down,” says Letcher. “If you have natural gas, you’re probably in better shape. If you’re pretty rural, you’re allocated to the point where you can run a drier intermittently, but it’s not steady, that’s for sure.”
