Policy priorities, agriculture technology and more were highlighted as South Dakota Farm Bureau members gathered in Sioux Falls Friday and Saturday. This year’s convention theme was Leadership, Precision, Performance, featuring a technology fair for the first time. SDFB Executive Director Krystil Smit says agriculture is an industry known for being early adopters of technology. “That is something we are proud about and wanted our attendees to see.” Throughout the year, county Farm Bureaus worked on identifying issues important to their part of the state. “Those resolutions then came before our delegate body and were voted on. It sets the direction for the work that we do in the upcoming year,” says Smit. “There was discussion about hemp, and the delegates voted against the resolution supporting industrial hemp,” says Scott VanderWal, SDFB president and American Farm Bureau Federation vice president. “Livestock development was also on the minds of members. A resolution was passed regarding the permitting process.” Hear more about the policy discussion in this interview with VanderWal.
