Wet weather impacted sugarbeet harvest across the country. That’s why American Sugarbeet Growers Association Vice-President and General Counsel Scott Herndon says crop insurance is crucial to growers this year. “We have a good working relationship with the Risk Management Agency and Administrator Martin Barbre. They administered some crop insurance changes for this year. We changed the tons of sugarbeets and pounds of raw sugar equalizing how growers get paid. Then, there’s something called the early harvest factor. It’s not what we thought it would be. We’re asking for that to be changed.” Herndon says growers need as much help as possible going into next year. There’s discussion on what can be done to protect cooperatives. “We are discussing ways to address that concern. We’re not sure how much can be done through the RMA or other means, but there’s an interest in the Red River Valley of seeking ways to protect cooperatives.”
