In the 24 major dairy production states, milk production went up nearly two percent in October. Dairy cow numbers are down from one year ago, but production on a per-cow basis is higher. In Minnesota, milk production increased 1.8 percent. At the same time, the size of Minnesota’s dairy herd declined by 4,000 head. South Dakota milk production increased nearly five percent with dairy cow numbers up 6,000 head from last year. Wisconsin milk output rose one percent.
