Quality problems were evident in North Dakota’s durum crop this year. Lower falling numbers, vitreous kernel content and higher damage levels are the issue. North Dakota Wheat Commission Marketing Specialist Erica Olson says the industry is well aware of the situation and there’s more optimism than expected going into 2020. “They’re working through the crop and it takes lots of patience to get through it.” Spring wheat quality issues weren’t as widespread as the durum, but similar. Olson addressed durum growers during the International Durum Forum on Tuesday. “A good takeaway was the dialogue that happens at this meeting. Everyone’s in the same boat this year. That allowed for good networking and conversations moving forward.”
