Near Thompson, North Dakota, farmer Tim Myron says potato harvest is a struggle, but he’s pleased to be halfway done. “We had such hot weather to begin harvest. There was a period of time where we had in one full day of harvest within seven days because of heat shut downs each day. That slowed us down,” says Myron. “We went quickly when we were able to go.” According to the latest USDA Crop Progress Report, the North Dakota potato harvest is 40 percent complete. Myron says the past week was their best week for progress. “Now, there’s a lot of dirt and a lot of mud. Things break down. We have to go slow.”
