Spring wheat quality continues to decline for farmers who don’t have wheat harvested. In Divide and Williams Counties, located in northwest North Dakota, Art Schilke hasn’t harvested any spring wheat yet. There’s lots of green in the fields. “There were germination issues in areas. That’s a problem we’ve been hearing from a lot of people,” says Schilke. “For the folks who have harvested wheat, they say there are some sucker heads creating problems. We’re also hearing others say the crop is junk. Other farmers say the color and everything looks good, but because of the rain events, the falling numbers are low.” Farmers are eager for another harvest window this week. “When we were planting last spring, our comment was we would probably be done harvesting by the middle of September. The middle of September has come and gone and we’re still harvesting.”
