Palmer amaranth seed is now on South Dakota’s list of prohibited noxious weed seeds. South Dakota Department of Agriculture Plant Industry program manager Brenda Sievers says the decision was several months in the making. “We took a look at seed rules and we hadn’t made changes since 1988,” she explains. “We also made some other changes like the cumulative total of 20 seeds per pound of Palmer amaranth. Before that, it was a percentage.” Sievers says seed producers need to test seed for Palmer amaranth and those purchasing seed should read labels before buying. She also clarifies Palmer amaranth isn’t on the state’s noxious weed list. To make the noxious weed list in South Dakota, a weed must be a perennial. Palmer amaranth is an annual weed.
