Palmer amaranth is confirmed in Lincoln County Minnesota and Grant County North Dakota so far this year. Both instances were from cover crop seed. University of Minnesota and NDSU Extension Sugarbeet Agronomist Tom Peters says he is concerned about the source. “With the high demand for seed in no plant fields in 2019, the possibility of contamination is a real one. If you used cover crops or did some activity involving seed or grain in no plant fields, maybe check them for pigweeds with the characteristics of Palmer amaranth.” Farmers can scout fields for a weed that looks different than others. Peters is also concerned there could be a higher Palmer amaranth infestation in Grant County involving more fields. Investigations are happening at this time.
