University of Minnesota Extension Plant Pathologist Dean Malvick is working to understand the distribution of the fungal pathogen that causes soybean sudden death syndrome. Malvick is seeking help determining where to find the pathogen. “It’s driven by weather and the pathogen is spreading to the north and west. We’d like to know how widespread it is at this point.” Malvick is asking farmers to send in samples if they suspect sudden death syndrome in their soybeans. “When the disease is found, it is often found in small patches. Interestingly, it’s often found in fields with soybean cyst nematode.” Read more about sudden death syndrome.
