The recent rains are welcome for farmers in Kittson County, Minnesota. It’s been dry. Hallock farmer Erik Younggren says the sugarbeets were drying out and the soybeans were starting to turn yellow. “We’ve had a good, slow rain. We’d been dry for about six weeks.” Near Gary, Corey Hanson says more heat is needed to progress the crop. “Row crops are behind and time will tell. Temperatures in the 60s don’t push the crops along quickly.” Brian Thalmann farms in south-central Minnesota near Plato, and says the crops are progressing ok. “I keep looking at the calendar and seeing it’s close to September 1. Temperatures are cooling. That’s getting us nervous. It will take many weeks of frost free weather into October to get the crop to maturity.”
