Winter wheat harvest is underway in the Onida, South Dakota. Grand Forks, North Dakota-based custom harvester Kent Braathen says yields are around average. “Test weight is around 60 pounds with 13 percent protein. It’s tough to get a good day in, though, because there is a lot of dew and wet ground in the evenings,” says Braathen. ” There are at least a good three weeks left of wheat harvest here. Some of the spring wheat was planted late, so harvest is still a month away for that.” Prior to heading north, Braathen was harvesting in the Kiowa, Kansas area. “There was anywhere from 50 to 75 bushels per acre winter wheat there.” This Harvest Hotline segment is made possible by the North Dakota Mill, U.S. Custom Harvesters, Incorporated and AgCountry Farm Credit Services.
