During the sugarbeet program at the Northwest Research and Outreach Center Crops and Soils Day, University of Minnesota Extension Sugarbeet Pathologist Ashok Chanda highlighted a project on the effect of fungicides in managing sugarbeet root diseases. “The main things we’re seeing in fields in terms of root diseases are rhizoctonia, fusarium and aphanomyces,” said Chanda. “When it comes to rhizoctonia, there are really good resistant varieties that all come with a seed treatment. Once that wears out, farmers will need to apply fungicide. If farmers have really severe fields with underground disease, farmers have to do an in-furrow application.”
