A group of poultry and cattle producers from the Midwest and southeastern U.S. say meat packers took advantage of them through contract production. The livestock producers want the USDA to address their concerns through Farmer Fair Practices, formerly known as the Packers and Stockyard Act. Rural Advancement Foundation International Associate Director Sally Lee says the rules will ensure basic protections, like retaliation after speaking the truth about a company in public. “Once the rule is released, we’ll be communicating with everyone interested,” says Lee. “We will be submitting comments and are hopeful they will take those comments into consideration.”
