Trade, farm labor, food safety and African swine fever were all addressed during a House Agriculture Subcommittee hearing on the state of U.S. livestock and poultry economies. National Pork Producers Council President David Herring told lawmakers restricted market access due to trade disputes is causing challenges for U.S. pork producers. “If it weren’t for retaliatory duties on U.S. pork, we’d be in an ideal position to meet China’s need for increased pork imports and put a dent in the U.S. trade imbalance with China. We seek an end to the trade dispute with China.” Northfield, Minnesota turkey farmer John Zimmerman also testified, answering questions on disease preparedness.
