NDSU Extension Cereal Agronomist Joel Ransom says the warmer weather is moving North Dakota corn along. “It’s nice to see things starting to pick up pace,” says Ransom. “The crop is filling the rows. Each day we can see additional growth.” Ransom estimates on average, the corn crop is still about two weeks behind the average growth pace. “I estimate May 22 as the date where 50 percent of the crop is planted. May was a really cold month and we didn’t gain anything later in the month,” he says. “I think we’re probably a few weeks behind where we’d like to be on growing degree days, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have the potential to catch up.”
