In areas of South Dakota, there’s short supply of millet and rye cover crop seed. South Dakota State University Extension Agronomy Field Specialist Sara Bauder says there are other warm and cool season grasses for farmers and ranchers to consider. “Forage sorghum is an option. Also cool season crops like rye grass, barley and oats. The mix depends on the grower. Usually a farmer would mix a grass with a broad leaf if they are grazing. If they are haying, maybe some broad leaves, but mostly grasses.” Listen to the story.
