American Farm Bureau Federation Chief Economist John Newton says the 2018 Market Facilitation Program payment stats from USDA tell a story about U.S. production. Soybean producers benefited the most from the first round of payments, followed by cotton and sorghum growers. “It sets us up well as growers start to think about what this second round of trade assistance is going to look like,” says Newton. “Though our farmers would rather have markets than aid, these monies help farmers meet their immediate financial needs.” The new Market Facilitation Program payments are completely different. Payments will be made at the county level. USDA isn’t expected to release the county rates for a few weeks. Newton wants the county rates to be fair.
