President Trump has proposed to close the U.S. border to Mexico. This is catching the attention of the U.S. potato industry. In a statement, National Potato Council Executive Vice President and CEO John Keeling said while it’s hard to evaluate the actual possibility of the threat to close the Mexican border, it’s not hard to understand the impact retaliatory tariffs have on the U.S. potato industry. There is concern the steel and aluminum tariffs will continue to cause loss of market share for U.S. potato products. The NPC said tariffs have reduced U.S. frozen potato exports down 24 percent, while Canadian and EU frozen potato exports to Mexico are up 21 percent.
