Livestock producers in the Northern Plains have endured several storms this winter season. Unfortunately, the extreme weather conditions can result in death of livestock. Julie Ellingson, North Dakota Stockmen’s Association executive vice president, says producers may be eligible for losses through USDA’s Livestock Indemnity Program. “When those loses become apparent, it’s important producers make contact with their local Farm Service Agency office,” says Ellingson. “Once the initial report is made, FSA will then walk them through the steps involved to make a claim under the program.” Producers should keep detailed records of their operation and the losses to apply for Livestock Indemnity Program assistance. A notice of loss should also be filed with the FSA within 30 days. Hear more.
