As we gear up for spring, Mosaic technical sales manager Sherry Koch urges farmers to be mindful of what they have and do not have in the soil. “Fertilize for the crop that you are shooting for,” said Koch. “For example, if we’re shooting for 180 bushel corn, let’s fertilizer for 180 bushel corn. Too often, we fertilizer for 140 bushel corn and we pull 200.” Key nutrients are being depleted from the soil. For crop nutrition, a balanced approach is needed. That includes the micronutrients. “We are seeing issues with zinc, some magnesium and we’re starting to see more boron deficiency. That’s where a soil test becomes key so we know what we have and what we don’t have.”
