Japan has established a new safeguard trigger on pork imports that could influence U.S. farmers. This new trigger applies to all U.S. pork exports after trade volumes reach a certain level. Canada and other members of the new Trans Pacific Partnership will not have to deal with this additional tariff. The European Union also escapes the safeguard trigger because of the EU-Japan free trade agreement.
