Crop insurance is an important risk management tool. NDSU Extension Crops Economist Frayne Olson says the farm program is another support mechanism for farmers. “With the new farm bill package, there were some adjustments,” says Olson. “The government shutdown will delay the ability for farmers to enroll in the programs because we need those details of the new bill.” Olson spoke at the Crop Insurance Conference in Fargo, fielding numerous questions. “They always says the devil is in the details. Even though the general framework for crop insurance and the farm program hasn’t changed dramatically, those details can make a difference.”
