The ethanol industry isn’t happy with the Environmental Protection Agency. While there are 15 billion gallons of conventional biofuel blending in the 2019 renewable volume obligations, the American Coalition for Ethanol CEO Brian Jennings says small refinery waivers continue to keep renewable fuel demand flat. Arthur, North Dakota farmer and National Corn Growers Association Chairman Kevin Skunes agrees, small refinery waivers make a difference. “In the EPA’s formula, there is a slot they could put expected waived gallons in any particular year. That’s always been zero. There needs to be a number included. Every year, we’ve waived some gallons, certainly not 2.5 billion gallons like last year. The ethanol industry is looking at these numbers to invest in more infrastructure for ethanol going forward.”
