American Soybean Association President John Heisdorffer is optimistic the upcoming trade meeting between the U.S. and China ahead of the G20 summit will include positive dialogue. However, he’s seen it before where negotiations start and then, discussions pull back. “The longer China is away, not buying from the U.S., the less likely China will come back,” says Heisdorffer. “We’ll never get back all of the trade we lost.” Heisdorffer, who farms in southeast Iowa, says everything that can be used to store soybeans is currently being used. “No one wants to sell soybeans at $7.50 or $8.”
