The Honorable Edward T. Schafer has been North Dakota’s governor and served as the Agriculture Secretary during the George W. Bush presidency. Ironically, Schafer is not big on titles and was often heard saying ‘just call me Ed.’ As of Wednesday, the Red River Valley Agricultural Research Center in Fargo now bears his name. At the ceremony, Schafer was humbled by the recognition. The former USDA leader appreciates the focus on research. “One of the things I learned at USDA was the capacity and the importance of research in the agricultural arena,” Schafer told RRFN. “Not only do we advance crops and livestock, but we advance rural lifestyle and the character and sense of community that comes out of Rural America. Research is really the driver on a lot of these issues.”
