A U.S. Meat Export Federation delegation is in Japan meeting with buyers and industry leaders. According to USMEF Chairman-elect Conley Nelson, Japan is a big customer for U.S. red meat and has the potential to increase sales. “You’ve got a younger generation here in Japan that is eating less fish and more red meat, which really opens up greater opportunity for us.” Nelson is a past president of the National Pork Board and manages the Midwest swine division for Smithfield Foods. This USMEF delegation also includes former NDSU Extension swine specialist David Newman, South Dakota State University Extension swine specialist Bob Thaler and Goodwin, South Dakota farmer Todd Hanten.
