In the Saginaw Valley, Michigan area, Hilleshog Seed dealer Kevin Schmidt says farmers may produce a record sugarbeet crop. “We started out with a very good stand. Conditions did get dry, but now the moisture is here.” Pre-harvest has started in the area, as farmers have been digging since August 26. Early tonnage was light, but that has changed over the past two weeks. “Things have picked up with the rain. We just dug a field in the mid-20s, 27 ton actually, so very happy with that.” Sugarbeets have been grown in the historic Saginaw Valley for over 100 years.
