Water quality and environmental regulations are hot-button issues in Minnesota. Minneapolis Star Tribune outdoors columnist Dennis Anderson said there is a widespread perception that farmers are the problem. Anderson said agriculture is currently winning legislative battles on these issues, “but, in time, that whole combination of farm policy and how it affects land and water will come home to roost against farmers.” State Senator Bill Weber was also part of the Farmfest forum said the buffer issue need more attention. In Weber’s view, the buffers are an unconstitutional ‘taking’ from the state. “That needs to be rectified and I think when the first lawsuit comes about the State of Minnesota will be found in violation of the constitution.”
