After weather and markets, the trade war between the U.S. and China was a frequent topic of conversation at Farmfest. “We don’t have any control over that and it is very frustrating,” said Gary Wertish, president, Minnesota Farmers Union. “We need to put a stop to it or get it fixed. We all want better trade deals, but we need to get something done.” USDA is preparing a $12 billion assistance package to help farmers hurt by trade retaliation. Wertish says that isn’t the answer. “It really takes us down a slippery slope. Of that $12 billion, very little will end up in the farmer’s pocket. Politically, it probably does us more damage than any actual help to the farmer.” Ultimately, Wertish says farmers need a price for the commodities they produce.
