Field pea harvest is underway for Hurdsfield, North Dakota farmer Jeff Mertz. The crop is yielding 35-to-40 bushels per acre. “The poorer areas of the field are a little less. The peas are really dry, but come dusk, conditions do get tough because of the vines.” Mertz has also started desiccating durum. With temperatures forecast in the 80s and 90s, the small grain crops should ripen fast. “The canola fields are also starting to show some yellow and dry down. I think what’s going to happen is multiple crops will be ready at the same time. However, the durum will take priority.”
