Dairy farmers are seeing payments from the revamped Margin Protection Program, which gives them hope for an updated risk management program in the farm bill. Associated Milk Producers Incorporated Vice-President of Public Affairs Sarah Schmidt says dairy farmers aren’t looking for a hand-out. “It is about calming the volatile waters out there as price swings dairy farmers are having to contend with makes planning like throwing darts. If we have a program that allows dairy farmers to ensure a margin, specifically being the milk price minus established feed costs, that really does provide a level of certainty.” Schmidt hopes September is a really productive month for the farm bill.
