Oklahoma based custom harvester Greg Thurman is harvesting wheat in the Onida, South Dakota area. About one month ago, the area received heavy wind and hail damage. Thurman says that damage is being reflected in some of the harvested winter wheat. “What didn’t get hailed out is running 50-to-55 bushels per acre. Both the quality and protein have been excellent,” says Thurman. “The spring wheat harvest wil be in full swing this week. It looks like it will run around 35-to-40 bushels.” Thurman adds the weather has truly dictated this year’s wheat crop and harvest schedule, calling it “a crazy year.”
