In the heat of summer, cattle producers are busy putting up hay. Recent rains in some areas have made that process more challenging, while other areas remain dry. South Dakota State University Cow/Calf Specialist Chanda Engel encourages producers to base timing of hay off morphology, not the time of year. “Producers typically think if they wait longer, more dry matter will be put on. You actually don’t and will start losing those lower leaves.” With summer weather also comes flies. Engel says there are fly control options with feed-through products that can be put into mineral. Some pour-ons can be applied every 30 days.
