USDA’s quarterly hogs and pigs report offered a bearish surprise to the market. Kerns and Associates President Joe Kerns sees the breeding herd category as the biggest surprise. That number was up three percent from last year. The total inventory was also up three percent, the highest June 1 total on record. While all of the numbers are up, South Dakota had a significant increase in the size of its breeding herd, up 18 percent. “It is no coincidence this is happening by the new packing facilities. That’s around the new Triumph facility.”
