The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is hosting a series of informational meetings on the proposed Groundwater Protection Rule. On Wednesday, meetings were held in Thief River Falls and Fergus Falls. Since listening sessions held last fall, there have been changes to the rule that exempt northwest Minnesota farmers from fall nitrogen fertilizer application restrictions. MDA Assistant Commissioner Susan Stokes says the revised rule is not one size fits all. “We really listened to the feedback and made changes that made sense. It is very locally driven. In fact, in part two of the rule, the Commissioner is required to consult with a local advisory team made up of farmers and their agronomists.” Written comments can be submitted to the Office of Administrative Hearings until July 26. In addition, five public hearings will be held across the state in July.
