National Milk Producers Federation President and CEO, Jim Mulhern, says there’s still work that needs to be done in the North American Free Trade Agreement negotiations. “Until they get an agreement on rules of origin, I don’t think much else will fall into place. When they get an agreement, there are still big issues to be addressed.” With this being the middle of May, a congressional vote on a final agreement by the end of the year could be slipping away. Mulhern says this doesn’t mean there won’t be a NAFTA agreement. There will continue to be negotiations and taking off some of the “artificial deadline pressure” could be helpful. The dairy industry is focused on Canada’s Class 7 milk pricing system.
