Getting a farm bill written and negotiated in the next work period is the goal for the Senate Agriculture Committee. Lawmakers are working out the details of some fixes for ARC-County. This includes Senator Thune/Brown’s marker legislation. North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp has also proposed fixes. “We have to be careful,” says Heitkamp. “We don’t know, with the one-year enrollment, what the (budget) score will be. If we drive up the score, that will make a difference on what happens with the bill. I would like the opportunity for more flexibility, but this all depends on the cost.” Heitkamp says it would be hard for a president to veto a farm bill that gets 60 votes in the Senate.
