Episode Description:
There's a new group of trusted advisors that's been established to help dairy operators find and utilize some risk management tools for both milk, and the beef on dairy element of their farms. Matt Ramsey is the livestock services manager with Purina Animal Nutrition and Land O’Lakes Risk Management. Ramsey talks with our farm broadcast colleague Pam Jahnke about why this team was created and where they focus their energies on assisting dairy producers. Ramsey understands that many operations have already been engaged with the Dairy Revenue Protection product, but there may be additional risk management elements that fit going into the new calendar year. Likewise Ramsey is excited about the potential of the Livestock Risk Protection program that's been revamped to address the high value and important revenue element, that beef on dairy calves and cull cows are adding to the balance sheet. Making sure that dairy operations protect that stream of income is critical.

Episode Description: From its very first breath, a dairy operator's goal is to make the most out of every lifecycle he manages. The care doesn't stop after it's a calf, or after first lactation. Today, Dr. Tom Earleywine, director of nutritional services for Purina Animal Nutrition, focuses on the research behind what drives an animal's success, one stage at a time. Earleywine says a producer can actually have an incredible influence on a calves outcome in utero! What can you do to make sure you're not missing opportunity and are truly setting animals up for success? Listen in. From the earliest days in utero through their dry cow and transition, Purina Dairy is there; helping dairy animals transition smoothly, grow efficiently and reach their full genetic potential, generation after generation.
Baby Calf Bellies Need Special Attention

Making sure that rumen functions properly and provides that calf with correct immune functions is a major focus at Purina. Dr. Jill Soderstrom is the dairy young animal solutions specialist for Purina Animal Nutrition. Her focus is helping dairy operations select and coordinate prebiotics, probiotics, enzymes and all other technologies available for a healthy calf from the inside out. Soderstrom explains that creating the correct balance in that calf's gut is like mustering troops for war. Sometimes you don't need all the weapons, but when calves come under stress, you do.
