Geopolitical news seems to have a bigger impact than fundamentals in the current grain trade. The Money Farm President Allison Thompson says it is a headline-driven market.
“One headline can certainly change the direction of grains, outside markets, everything, so quickly,” said Thompson. The overnight trade has tended to be the stronger sessions. “We kind of let those gains go during the day sessions, so we really need to see momentum stick around outside of that thin trade.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and his Chinese counterpart will be part of trade negotiations this week in Paris. This will set the stage for the Trump-Xi summit in a couple of weeks. Soybeans get a lot of attention, but Thompson said corn could be part of the discussion.”They’ve talking about producing more domestic supplies and not needing as many imports going forward, but their crop has struggled this year.”
